MAKE: Knitted Scrunchies

Fuzzy-Wuzzy & Cutie-Cozy

Knitted scrunchies are so cute and so easy to make, you can whip up a few on lazy Sunday, snuggled up on the sofa.

aaaand….its a great left-over yarn scrap buster too!

You will need:

  • 3.5mm knitting needles

  • Variety of yarns - light weight yarn works best (4ply), but also works with thicker yarns too (8ply)

  • Hair ties or elastic

  • Sewing machine or hand-sewing needle & thread

Step 1.

  • Cast on 100-110 stitches.

  • Knit in stocking stitch (one row knit, one row purl). Continue until work measures 8cm.

  • (You can make your scrunchie bigger or smaller depending on what look you like. The ones we made range from 5cm - 10cm.)

Step 2. (optional) Add BOBBLES!

  • When you are happy with the width of your scrunchie, on the second to last row (right side) add in bobbles as follows:

knit 4, * knit into the next stitch 4 times, turn, purl 4, turn, knit 2 together twice, turn, purl 2, turn, knit 2 together, knit 9 * repeat *—* until 4 stitches. knit to end of row. Next row, cast off.

Step 3.

  • (without bobbles) When you are happy with the width, cast off. Trim yarn ends.

  • Using a warm iron, press gently so the piece is lying flat and not rolling on the edges.

Step 4.

  • With wrong sides facing, join the short ends together, to make a loop.

  • Either hand sew or use the sewing machine on longer stitch (nearly, but not quite the biggest stich on your machine).

Step 5.

  • Encase your hair tie/elastic.

  • Fold your knitted loop in half length-wise and pin together along this edge.

Step 6.

  • Either hand-sew or using the sewing machine (bobbles side up) stitch around edge to enclose your scrunchie.

Done!

Have fun making lots of different scrunchies - fluffy, woolly, silky, rainbow, pastel… bobbly or plain! We hope you’ve enjoyed this little tutorial.
